The power of a smile

There are many motivational tools out there, but one of the simpliest most affective one is gratitude. this simple tool is so amazingly powerful.

But first, let’s define - what is gratitude? Gratitude is your ability to say something good about a person in relation to something they’ve done. For example: You’re a wonderful person, you’re so considerate, You’re a good person, you’re brave, you’re professional. Just saying “well done” doesn’t say anything about the person you’re talking to, and if you find yourself using it too much, I recommend you’ll stop.

To drive this point home, let’s look at the reverse situation: let’s say your boss always complains about you, nothing is good enough. It sounds something like this: “Is that everything you’ve done today? that’s it? what kind of work is that? My little girl can do it better and she’s only 5! It’s not good/professional/fast enough”

How do you feel about a boss like that? Does he motivate you? Would you even make an attemp to try harder, think bigger, be more creative, dare, lead, contribute? I think not.

Now what if you had a boss that greated you every morning with a smile saying: “It’s a nice shirt you’re wearing today. I really liked the way you handled X yesterday. You’re very thorough and extremely professional. There’s a project that I think we can make more out of it than we’re getting right now and I’d like us to sit together and brainstorm about it….I love that you thought of it! You’re wonderful.”

How’s that for a boss? Aren’t you motivated now to do more, contribute more, think bigger than you’ve done before?

Who would you prefer working for? I’m guessing the second one, right? Now, what if these are not two bosses, but two approches to life? Which one is more dominant with you? Are the people around you sad? do the tiptoe around you? Are they careful with what they have to say? Do they only do what they’re told? If so, perhpas you’re the first boss…

Do you want to motivate them? It’s so very simple. All you need is a smile and senscire gratitude. You can start using it immediately. Even though at the begining it might feel fake and you feel as if you really have to look hard to find anything to compliment them about, make the effort to say something nice to your child, your spouce, your co-worker, your friend, your mother-in-law ;) Try it now. It’s that easy.

Looking for a way to motivate yourself? Don’t beat yourself up like the first boss would do. Don’t be so hard on yourself or judge yourself too harshly. Instead, change your outlook about your own life right now. This very moment. Do it now. it’s easy and it will turn your life around.

Make a list about all the things youv’e done yesterday and find something good to say about yourself, even if it feels fake at the begining. Even if it was only making a sandwich for your child school lunch. I reached out to a new friend today. How couragious, loving and committed I am. :)

And about that sandwich you made - know that you’re a wonderful person, so caring and loving.

To illustrate the power of a smile, watch this short video. These are 16 minutes that will really make a difference in your life.

Now do something nice for yourself, and forward it to all your friends who need to remember how to smile. :D
